The Road to Better Education Information

The CEA finds that the need for accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education is usually the initial motivation behind a formal information system. Those institutions applying for accreditation are faced with the need produce evidence of education program improvement.

Accreditation is definitely a good reason to establish an information system. Additional important benefits are also derived from the ability to better understand, track, and improve programs that prepare teachers.

The best way to get started is to review the goals for your education program and assess your progress toward achieving those goals. If there is a shortage of good reports based upon quantitative, accurate data available to track program progress, that's a sign it is time to get to work.

Assemble a team of education and information technology professionals. Task the team with further defining your current information system along with proposed changes. Then review their findings in terms of the cost and benefits of proposed changes.\
