Collect, Process, & Report Data

A clear understanding of the purpose of your assessment system helps identify important data. Available data is identified for collection based upon its importance.

The processing logic of your assessment system is established through analysis and design. The logic can either be set as part of a new system or based upon the modification of an existing system. In either case the data must be collected in an organized manner to support processing.

Organize your data by starting with the reports that the system must produce. Work backwards to the data needed for the reports. If past reports do not exist for reference, mock up some fictitious reports. The key is to be specific about your reporting needs.

It is inefficient to have multiple information systems for similar needs. Consolidate assessment data into one reporting system. Apply "normalization" rules that group data within a formal data structure. This will make it easier to meet a variety of ongoing reporting needs with superior results.

Educators often find that information technology is a field of study just like teaching. Good information systems can be created with minimal effort with the help of an experienced professional.
