Information Technology for Educators

Educators should understand the information systems that they rely upon. If possible, stick with information systems that have already proven to be valuable and reliable. Improve upon these systems over time and they will become increasingly valuable. It is more efficient to modify existing systems than build and maintain new ones.

If a better information system is needed, pick an existing system as a starting point. A model system that includes documentation, data analysis, and workflow definition will provide valuable insights. Ideally, the prototype should be a system that is already in use.

Manage the scope of your efforts; try not to do too much at once. A manageable project increases the probability of success.

A new system should be easy to run and modify. It is safer to use a system that can be run on a variety of computers. This makes backup and support more reliable and inexpensive. Fine tune your programs until the reports are reliable. Make sure that reports from the system will be valuable before you put a great deal of time and effort into production operations.

Finally, pick a solution that can be expanded over time. As educators, you want to focus on teaching. Short term information systems take more time in the long run.
